Zombie Baby Attacks During Family Portrait Session

Last fall, I had the privilege of taking the first formal portrait of the Reid family since the addition of their daughter Elinore. Her proud parents, Derek and Christine, have a very bright and adorable young lady on their hands, but they may need to be careful when she starts cutting teeth…

Project:Deadlady meets Project:Mayhem (and maybe Project Runway)

My friend Liz and I started a photo series over a year ago, informally titled “Project:Deadlady.” It’s a blatant rip-off of Amanda Palmer’s 2009 project, entitled “Who Killed Amanda Palmer?,” and we thank her for continuing to ignore our plagiarism. Recently, we happened upon a demolition site which we thought would be well-suited to the project, but the resulting narrative went a bit outside the lines.

Portable Projector Suggests Possible Pocket-Batsignal

Inspired by a tutorial I found through Strobist.com, I’ve started tinkering with a flash-powered portable strobe-projector. I’ve been experimenting with projected overlays in potraiture for some time, and the biggest drawback I’ve found is the lack of portability. Sure, there are new-fangled digital pocket-projectors on the market these days, but I like the simple, old-school approach of using a slide projector.

Using a Vivitar 383 off-camera flash, an old Nikkor 50mm lens, and a small aluminum box to hold a slide between the two, I can project a 35mm transparency pretty much anywhere. Since I’m not using an actual projector lens right now, calculating focal distance takes a bit of trial and error. Still, I’m enjoying the ability to put pictures on any wall I want.

Here There Be Critters

My basement is weird and creepy. Sometimes I just go with it. All materials were found onsite; don’t know what’s with all the plastic sheeting.

Sogeking To The Rescue! Happy New Year!

Sogeking, drawn on the lid of ImbrognaPhoto's laptop

New year, new resolve to keep talking about myself!

The last few months have been very eventful for me, my family, and many of the folks around me. Joy and sadness, triumph and loss, sweet & sour… Stuff happened. I have somewhere between eight and ten updates on deck, ready to catch this site up from August to now. And I couldn’t have done it without the help of the man from Sniper Island!

My Oldest Fan

It’s hot in here. I fully intended to show off some beekeeping photos from this weekend, but I just keep sticking myself in front of the fan instead. So I’ll put it here, and maybe it’ll get me back to work.

(It’s an old Westinghouse I inherited when some friends moved cross-country, mostly because “it looks cool.” ) Continue reading >>

Thanks, Thumbtack!

dino

No pictures in this post; just a quick thank-you to Thumbtack.com, a sort of photographer-networking site which has been checking craigslist posts for me ever since I activated (and forgot ) my account last October. It found me a short-notice, business-headshot client out of nowhere!

So, on the one hand, I got one gig in eight months; on the other hand, it was a good job with a lovely client. It’s free to list with Thumbtack, there is a good network of members and clients if you choose to explore it, and clearly they’re low-spam if I forgot about them. So, in short, thanks, Thumbtack!

Your mom has a face like a clock!

2011-grad-sidewalk

What does that title mean? Don’t ask me; I just work here.

I do a good chunk of the advertising design for Frame It/ Waban Gallery and its two websites. Occasionally I make a little banner or ad that looks good AND does its job. These are some of the better ones from the last few weeks. Continue reading >>

Spring Catch-Up: Portraits

Over the late winter and early spring months, I had the opportunity to work with a pretty diverse group. One week, I was called in to photograph Jennifer Davis, the President of the National Center on Time and Learning. The following week I got to do headshots with 8-year-old Alessandra Briggs, who had a modelling gig lined up before I even made up her comp card!

Somewhere in there, my friend and creative force-of-nature Liz decided that IKEA would be the perfect location to model some vintage fashions. Her ideas for photo ops almost always turn out awesome, so I pretty much grab my camera and go. Besides, they have swedish meatballs!

Spring Catch-Up: Events

So, I’m fudging the timeline a bit, since the BLOWW Valentine’s Day event happened in February (which is definitely not spring,) but I think it’s worth it. Continue reading >>

Spring catch-up: Landscapes

I’ll have to get used to posting in a more blog-like fashion, so let’s start with some spring catch-up!

Welcome to the new imbrognaphoto.com

Once upon a time, I scowled in the general direction of WordPress, thinking it was the escape route of the talentless designer. Then I realized that it is merely an effective and efficient tool for people who want to focus on other things, and as the saying goes, it is a poor craftsman who blames his tools.

In any case, now is my chance to discover whether it is I, or WordPress, who needs an infusion of imagination. (I don’t think it’s the blog’s fault.)

APRIL NEWS

The last couple months have been low-key, photo-wise. Not that there wasn’t stuff. Oh, I assure you there was stuff. It was just… low key stuff. Headshots for eight-year-old actresses and education-reform specialists, that sort of stuff.

The next two months will be eventful– the Boston Marathon is just around the corner, and horse-clinic and wedding season are both approaching, which means things (and I) will be more active around these parts.

Of course, if you’re up to something exciting and would like some documentation, by all means drop me a line.

JANUARY NEWS

2011 has been chilly so far, and over two feet of snow shut down the greater Boston area for a couple days this month. Some of our local bands have managed to keep things hot, though!

Check out the “Landscapes” tab for a few new views of winter in Harvard Square, and see the new lineup of Tijuana Sweetheart, along with Tired Old Bones and Cult45, under “Music & Events.”

NOVEMBER NEWS

Updates aplenty, starting with improved navigation menus across the top and side of this page! Use those new buttons to see the recent additions in almost every category of the site (some might call it “spreading thin,” while others see it as “diversification.”)

OCTOBER NEWS

Looking forward to Halloween weekend! Aside from the usual assortment of ghouls, goblins, and Justin Bieber lookalikes, this year we’re checking out “Fuck the Clock Tower, Save Horror Business!” at Great Scott in Allston on 10/31 (no holiday-moving shenanigans from these guys!) All proceeds from ticket sales help preserve a mainstay of the Allston/Brighton community, Horror Business! Go buy a ticket already!

SEPTEMBER NEWS

The 2011 “Save Our Swimsuit Calendar” is now available for pre-order! All money raised drom this project will be donated to the Gulf Restoration Network, for use in marine research projects. For more information on them, visit healthygulf.org

AUGUST NEWS

The “Save Our Swimsuit Calendar” is in the can. Shot, edited, and awaiting some final formatting. The Kickstarter page will be going live shortly. Hopefully the twisted, questionable humor won’t be misconstrued as cynicism.

JULY NEWS

Moving right along on preparations for our Oil Pollution Calendar Project! We have 15 very brave and compassionate Boston-area models, ready and willing to demonstrate the future of the Swimsuit Calendar, if tragedies like the Deepwater Horizon oil leak continue to happen.

The main goal is to raise awareness of the environmental impact that these incidents have on all the plants and animals that inhabit our planet, but we’re hoping to raise a little money for marine research groups and restoration groups as well. Calendars will be on sale shortly before Labor Day; please watch this page for availability updates and behind-the-scenes goodies!

Also, new photos added under People and Events&Music, with appearances by Miika Benedetti, Luke Lepore, the ladies of Raspberry Beret, and Tijuana Sweetheart!

JUNE NEWS

Life has been hectic, despite the absence of a May update. William has been busy with several private commissions ranging from some amazing pin-up photo sessions to illustrations for public-garden signage. Also in the works is a return to three-dimensional media, from prop construction for a fashion show, to a full-scale installation at the Lilypad Gallery in Somerville, MA later this summer.

IMPORTANT JUNE NEWS:

William is collaborating with several models, artists and generally-good-people on a swimsuit calendar to raise money for relief, rescue and cleanup efforts surrounding the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. This isn’t your normal pin-up calendar, though!!! Anyone who would like to help, as a model, sponsor or potential reseller, please contact me with your info, interests and availability. We will be shooting throughout July, and looking to have the calendar for sale in August.

APRIL NEWS

William recently had the opportunity to shoot some promotional photos for Wendy Jepson’s new project, 12 Races 12 Months. Visit12Races12Months.com to see shots of Wendy in action and follow her in her marathon year (pun intended.)

NEW SECTIONS(sorta:) With so many photographic interests, the process of organization on this site is a mighty one, and still ongoing. The “Cast Reflections” collaboration with Joey Asal hasn’t found it’s way back to a proper category link, but can still be viewed here.

Also, the first session of a photographic homage to “Who Killed Amanda Palmer?” can be seen here. Plans are already in motion for the next couple sessions, so stay tuned!

MARCH NEWS

NEW SECTIONS – “Weddings & Events” has been split into two sections, weddings and music & events. Photos from the March 6, 2010 show at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA, featuring the Marvels, Tijuana Sweetheart (formerly Vagiant,) Never Got Caught and Dead Friends have been added to music & events, as well as photos from the YWCA awards luncheon held at the Copley Marriott in Boston in June 2009.

Photos from the collaboration with Boston artist Joey Asal, entitled “Cast Reflections,” have been temporarily removed from the site. Selections from the photo set will be incorporated into projections & overlays.

Updates from previous months will now be archived in the News Archive section, and can be viewed by selecting “view past updates” at the bottom of the welcome screen

FEBRUARY NEWS

NEW SECTION – “Projections” has been added to the galleries menu below. “Projections” is the combination of several of my favorite elements -portraits and figure studies, texture and macro photography, design and tactile textiles. I will add to this section as I explore the results of wrapping textures around forms using light & shadow.

Photos from the opening for Joey Asal’s “Kinetic Geometry” at BoConcept Urban Design are now in the “weddings” gallery. Mod fashions provided by Artifaktori Vintage.

Photos from the Anti-Valentine’s show at the Baseball Tavern, featuring the Jeddo Stars, Tijuana Sweetheart (formerly Vagiant) and Tired Old Bones are now in the “weddings” [edit 10 Mar 10: events] gallery.
